What is CBD oil?

CBD (or cannabidiol) is a non-intoxicating compound found in relative abundance in the hemp plant (Cannabis sativa).
Although research is still in its infancy, studies indicate that it may have the potential to help manage a variety of health conditions, including anxiety, inflammation, insomnia and chronic pain.

For more information, check out our blog articles: What is CBD?

What is a normal starting dose for CBD oil?

CBD oil dosage differs for each person, depending on a range of factors, including weight, height, and reasons for taking CBD.

For those new to CBD, we recommend starting with a low CBD oil dose (e.g. 20 mg per day) and increasing this gradually until the optimal CBD dosage is found.

Alternatively, use our CBD Oil Dosage Calculator above to find a tailored starting dose.

While following this guidance, you can manage your daily CBD dosage based on what works best for you, and combine various CBD products if desired.

How to find your optimal CBD oil dosage

Start low, go slow

To find your optimal CBD dosage, we recommend that you take a low starting dose for at least a week.
If you do not notice any benefits after this period of time, increase your dosage by a small amount every few days until the desired effects are achieved.

If you think you may have taken too much CBD, or experience any adverse side-effects, such as lightheadedness or a dry mouth, we recommend that you lower your CBD dosage immediately.

You can also use the CBD dosage chart below to find a suitable starting dose based on your weight.

Can I take too much CBD?

Yes, it is possible to take too much CBD. While the effects are unlikely to be serious, exceeding 150mg+ daily dosage may cause unpleasant side effects, including nausea, lightheadedness and diarrhea.

Therefore, we recommend using a dosage that’s tailored to your needs.

How to take CBD oil

1. Find the right CBD dosage

CBD oil dosage depends on many different factors, including weight, height, and reasons for consumption. Use our CBD Dosage Calculator UK to find your optimal dosage.

2. Put drops under the tongue

Lift your tongue to the roof of your mouth and place the required number of drops beneath it.

3. Leave under the tongue for 1 minute

Leave the oil under your tongue for one minute before swallowing. This allows the CBD to be fully absorbed by the oral mucosa. It can take 15-30 minutes for CBD to take effect.

When to take CBD oil

There are no hard and fast rules when it comes to taking CBD. Some people may add it to their daily supplement routine and take it in the morning, while others may choose to take CBD before bedtime. This could be because CBD has been shown to have a calming effect on the central nervous system, which could in turn aid sleep.

Another approach is to take small doses of CBD at regular intervals throughout the day to maintain a steady dosage. All of these are perfectly fine and are down to each individual's preference. The important thing is to make sure you do not exceed the recommended daily dosage.

Best ways to take CBD oil

There are many different ways to take CBD oil. Common means of administration include CBD oil, CBD balms, and CBD Gummies.

1. CBD oils

CBD oil dose

CBD oil drops have higher bioavailability than most other means of administration, which means that they increase the amount of CBD that enters the bloodstream.

As CBD oil is administered under the tongue, this allows the CBD to bypass the digestive process and enter directly into the bloodstream via the oral mucosa.

As a result, the effects may be felt more quickly than other means of taking CBD – usually within 15-30 minutes.

2. CBD Gummies

gummies-v2-Naturecan US

CBD Gummies and other edible products are a delicious way to get your daily dose of CBD.

Popular CBD edibles include cookies, brownies, nut butters, gummies and chocolates.

Like CBD capsules, CBD snacks have to be digested before entering the bloodstream, which means they take longer to have an effect than CBD oils – usually within 1-2 hours.

3. CBD balms

dosage CBD

While CBD oils and CBD capsules have a systemic effect upon the body, CBD balms and other CBD Skincare Products target problem areas, such as sore joints or muscles, and keep CBD benefits localised to the point where they are most needed.

As CBD balms are absorbed by the skin, they do not enter the bloodstream and bypass the digestive process. This makes them relatively fast-acting, typically taking effect within 30 minutes.

How much CBD is in one application of CBD balm?

The amount of CBD contained in one application of CBD balm can vary greatly, depending on how much you apply and the product’s CBD concentration.

One way to estimate this is by recording the number of applications you get out of one whole balm container, and dividing the product's total CBD concentration by this number.

For example, if you get about 200 applications from a 100ml tub of CBD Arnica Cream with 1000mg of CBD, you can estimate that each application contains about 5mg of CBD (1000Γ·200=5).

Who can take CBD oil?

CBD oil can be taken by any adult looking for a safe, natural way to support a healthy lifestyle.

Please consult with your doctor if you are considering using CBD to treat a specific medical condition. If you are taking prescribed medication, please ask your doctor about possible drug interaction with CBD.

Why am I not feeling the effects of CBD?

If you’ve been taking CBD for a while and haven’t noticed any benefits, this could be down to a number of reasons:

1. Your daily dosage may be too low

Try using our CBD Oil Dosage Calculator above to find a starting dose that’s tailored to your needs.

Then try increasing this dosage gradually every few days until you start to feel the effects.

2. You may not have taken CBD for long enough

CBD accumulates in the body over time, so the longer you use it, the more likely it is that you’ll feel the desired effects.

In a survey we conducted in 2021, we found that customers who had been using our CBD products for 4 months or longer reported the most health benefits.

To explore the findings of our survey in more detail, check out our blog article: CBD oil experiences: What our customers say about CBD

3. You may be using the wrong product for your needs

Some CBD products work differently to others, so it’s important to find the product that best matches your needs.

For example, if you’re looking to soothe aching muscles or irritated skin, topical CBD products such as CBD muscle balm or CBD daily moisturiser are a great way to target problem areas and therefore would be the best starting point.

On the other hand, if you’re looking for more generalised or systemic effects on the body, ingestible products like CBD oils or gummies may be more effective.

4. You may be using a poor quality product

Due to a lack of proper regulation, there are countless poor quality products on the CBD market, many of which have misleading label claims and no proof of third-party testing.

This means that many products contain less CBD than claimed on the label. Moreover, this CBD is likely to be of low quality and purity, which can further reduce the product’s effectiveness.

Make sure you buy from a trusted seller who sells plant-based CBD and offers proof of independent laboratory testing (usually in the form of a certificate of analysis).

5. You may have unrealistic expectations

Unfortunately, the growing hype around CBD has engendered a large amount of over-advertising which exaggerates its potential health benefits, leading many people to have unrealistic expectations.

Contrary to some of these over-hyped claims, CBD is not a β€œmiracle extract”, β€œmagic oil” or β€œcure-all”, and it doesn’t start working immediately.

CBD affects everyone differently, so don’t expect to have exactly the same experience with it as someone else. Just be patient, experiment, and see what CBD could do for you.

How long will a bottle of CBD oil last?

To find out how long a bottle of CBD oil will last, take the total number of milligrams of CBD contained in the bottle and divide it by your daily dose.

For example, if your daily CBD dosage is 21mg, and you take 5 drops of 1000mg CBD Oil daily, divide 1000 by 21 and you get 48 – so the bottle would last 48 days.

Which CBD oil strength should I choose?

If you’re new to CBD, we would recommend choosing a low strength oil so you can see how your body reacts, as CBD affects everyone differently.

However, it is important to note that choosing a suitable oil strength is not as important as taking the right number of CBD oil drops. This is because oil strengths differ in terms of how much CBD they contain per drop.

For example, one drop of 1000mg CBD oil contains as much CBD as two drops of 500mg CBD oil (approximately 4 mg CBD).

FAQs

CBD (short for cannabidiol) is a non-intoxicating compound found in relative abundance in hemp and cannabis. While research is limited, early studies indicate that it may have the potential to support people with a wide range of health complaints, including chronic pain, anxiety, inflammation and sleep issues.

Discover more about CBD and its therapeutic potential in our blog article: What is CBD?

CBD oil influences the body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS), a cell-signalling network which helps to regulate a wide range of cognitive and physiological processes, including mood, appetite, sleep and pain.

The ECS is made up of three key components: endocannabinoids (cannabinoids produced by the body), cannabinoid receptors and enzymes. Endocannabinoids are chemical messengers that bind to cannabinoid receptors to inform the ECS when the body is out of balance – for example, when pain or inflammation is detected. Once they have relayed the message, enzymes step in and break them down.

While THC and other cannabinoids imitate the activity of endocannabinoids by binding to cannabinoid receptors in the brain, CBD is thought to have a weak affinity for these receptors and to affect the ECS indirectly.

For example, it prevents the enzyme FAAH (Fatty Acid Amide Hydrolase) from breaking down endocannabinoids like anandamide, thereby increasing endocannabinoid levels in the body and enabling them to continue performing their role. In this way, CBD supports the function of the ECS and helps to keep the body in a balanced, healthy state.

CBD is a natural compound that affects everyone differently. While side effects have been reported in rare cases, these are typically mild and often caused by using low quality products or exceeding the recommended dosage.

Uncommon side effects of CBD can include:

  • dry mouth
  • reduced blood pressure
  • lightheadedness
  • changes in appetite

In addition, CBD oil should not be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding to avoid any potential risks to the baby's development.

The price of CBD oil is determined in large part by the costs of cultivation, extraction, and certification.

We use highly advanced technology to extract CBD from the hemp plant, and also to purify it, which makes the production of CBD oil a very expensive process.

In addition, CBD products are usually heavily taxed, and there are also various costs associated with product testing and the legal process for hemp farming.

The legality of CBD varies by state and by country. In the United States, industrial hemp extracts (including CBD) were legalized under the federal 2018 Farm Bill, although many states (such as Idaho) reserve the right to enforce a stricter state code. Please check the requirements of your state before ordering or traveling with CBD.

Yes, CBD is safe to consume. According to a review by the World Health Organisation (WHO), CBD is generally safe and well-tolerated, although more long-term research is needed to confirm its safety.

CBD is not an intoxicating substance and therefore it does not cause a high or have abuse potential. THC is the intoxicating cannabinoid which produces the high associated with cannabis, but all Naturecan products are expertly purified and independently tested to ensure they contain non-detectable levels of THC (<0.01%) and are completely safe for use.

Yes, it is safe and legal to drive a car after using CBD. CBD is non-intoxicating, so it will not make you high or impair your judgement.

Some poor quality products may contain more THC than claimed on the label, which could potentially cause intoxication or cognitive impairment, so it’s extremely important to only buy CBD from trusted and reputable sellers who can guarantee their products have non-detectable THC levels.
