How to deal with Hangxiety?

Hangxiety (also known as beer fear) … that all-consuming feeling of utter despair.

Does everyone hate you today? Did you seriously embarrass yourself the night before? Should you never go out again? I can guarantee that post-night out feeling will have all these thoughts running through my mind. I can also guarantee they are a complete figment of my imagination.

Heading out for drinks with friends is a great way to blow off steam, the hangover the next day however makes you question every decision you’ve ever made. If you live with anxiety anyway, alcohol might reduce your negative feelings and distract you from your destructive thought process.

Seems like a good idea in the moment. A quick fix for reducing shyness and feeling complete relaxation. Wrong – drinking alcohol triggers the release of endorphins but the feeling of anxiety will eventually return; like water pouring into the empty holes of your chest making it hard to come up for air.

So, what is hangxiety?

To put it lightly, hangxiety is the feeling of anxiety returning to your hungover body. This can lead to severe feelings of regret, sadness, excessive worrying, a racing mind and an all round feeling of dread.

How can you prevent hangxiety?

There are a few ways we know how to try and prevent hangxiety.

      1. Drink less alcohol – this method is proven to work a treat but seems to be the least tried. We know you want to get drunk, that’s the whole point of drinking, so why would you drink less alcohol? We hear you. Keep reading.
      2. Match your alcohol intake with your water intake – this will decrease the effects of dehydration that alcohol has on the body. You need to give your body the electrolytes that are being lost through alcohol consumption.
      3. Pace yourself – this is a natural way of decreasing the amount you drink without having to go long periods without a drink in your hand, just take slower sips. Your body will thank you later.
      4. Eat well – food prevents alcohol from passing quickly into the small intestine, meaning the alcohol is absorbed slower than on an empty stomach.

Is there a quick fix to get rid of it?

Unfortunately, if you do end up with a case of hangxiety, there isn’t a quick fix to getting rid of it. Don’t worry, we do have a few suggestions that can help alleviate the pain.

      1. Go for a walk – a short walk can lower your heart rate, relieve stress levels and ease anxiety. It also gets you into some fresh air and distracts you from the negative environment you were stuck in.
      2. Hydrate – while electrolytes won’t get rid of the bad feeling, they will make your body feel a little more human which should eventually contribute to settling the anxiety.
      3. Sleep – the lack of sleep from the night before will make your body and mind exhausted. Extra sleep will allow your body to recover and hopefully alleviate some of your hangover symptoms.
      4. CBD

What is CBD and how will it help hangxiety?

Cannabidiol (CBD) is a non-psychoactive extract of the cannabis plant, one of over 100 natural components. The CBD is filtered to remove 100% of the THC content; don’t worry, it won’t get you high.

CBD works by interacting with one of the body’s own regulatory system called the endocannabinoid system (ECS). The ECS controls important functions like mood, memory, stress, sleep, behaviour, appetite, pain, immune function and reproductive health.

For those who suffer from anxiety, CBD is a way to help restore the balance within your body – working naturally to reduce your prolonged, unsettling sense of alertness, and bring an end to other psychological and physiological effects as a result. Read more here about how CBD can help with anxiety and stabilizing you mood.

So, no, CBD won’t get rid of your hangover or magically make you feel fresh again, but it can give hangxiety a good telling off. Alcohol messes with our levels of serotonin, endorphins and GABA. Take it from us, you don’t want to upset those neurotransmitters, they know how to make your life difficult. They are the reason our anxiety levels are raised.

It is suggested that CBD can help regulate GABA and other neurotransmitters, offering your body the sense of balance it is desperately searching for. A consistent dose of CBD in your life should help you to manage your day-to-day anxiety, a few extra drops after a messy night out should alleviate some of your hangxiety stresses.

So what’s the lesson here? While you can’t guarantee you’re not going to drink too much, you can guarantee you have a bottle of CBD waiting on your nightstand for you when you get back. Shop Naturecan USA here for all your CBD needs.
