What are the benefits of sourcing CBD oil from organic hemp?

What is organic hemp?

Hemp is a subspecies of Cannabis sativa, with a composition cultivated to have negligible levels of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), the controlled cannabinoid. It is prized for its seed, fibre, and more recently, CBD oil.

There are three plant species within the subfamily of cannabis: Cannabis sativa, Cannabis indica and Cannabis ruderalis

To grow organic hemp, farmers can’t use man-made fertilisers, pesticides, growth regulators or genetically modified seeds. Instead, farmers use an old technique known as crop rotation. This usually leads to less crop yields compared to non-organic hemp farming. Yet, this results in organic hemp with many potential benefits including:

  • Much smaller environmental impact
  • Less impact on pollinators
  • Improved field quality

Keep reading for more info on these benefits, along with why we use our organic hemp to produce CBD oil, why we source from the US, our extraction process and why you should choose Naturecan for your next purchase.

Why do we use organic hemp to produce our CBD oil?

At Naturecan, all of our CBD products are made using a broad-spectrum distillate sourced from certified organic, US-grown hemp plants. Our supply chain partners have invested in market-leading extraction and purification technologies, and with their help, we have created a wide range of products to help consumers find a healthy, safe and effective solution to their needs.

Our goal is to create high quality products that help people lead healthy, happy and pain-free lives. We source our CBD from organic hemp because cultivation does not use harmful pesticides or fertilisers, allowing us to guarantee product quality and safety, while reducing our environmental impact.

Why do we source our hemp from the US?

We source our CBD from US-grown hemp for various reasons. One main reason is that American producers grow the best raw materials, in part because they are more experienced and technologically advanced than producers in other countries, but also because Oregon’s rich organic soils provide optimal growing conditions for hemp plants.

In addition, the American CBD market is more advanced and regulated than elsewhere, and their legal framework allows for suitable plant strains to undergo enhanced breeding.

Organic vs. non-organic hemp

We choose to source our CBD from organic hemp as we like our products to be as close to nature as possible, without any of the harmful chemicals that can be found in non-organic hemp products. Some differences between organic hemp and non-organic hemp are as follows:

1. Impact on marine ecosystems: Non-organic hemp cultivation uses chemical fertilisers and pesticides that can run off the land into marine ecosystems and lead to harmful algal blooms. By contrast, organic hemp production does not involve the use of harmful fertilisers and, therefore, has a smaller environmental impact.

2. Impact on pollinators: Non-organic pesticides ensure only the plant remains alive, killing off all insects and pollinators which are vital components of any ecosystem. As these harmful pesticides are not used in the production of organic hemp, fewer pollinators are killed as a result.

3. Impact on field quality: Chemical pesticides can destroy natural soil compounds. Because of this, the soil loses its natural fertiliser, leading farmers to apply chemical fertilisers. This is not good for the hemp plant, and can contaminate the CBD oil that is derived from it.

How do we extract CBD from hemp?

This leads us on to our extraction process:

1. CO2 Extraction

Pressurised carbon dioxide is passed through the plant to strip the CBD and other hemp compounds, such as minor cannabinoids.

This creates a crude oil that’s clean, high quality, and safe to consume. While most CBD brands stop the extraction process at this stage, we go further and use chromatography to remove any impurities from the end product.

2. Chromatography

We use an advanced purification system developed by RotaChrom to separate the desired compounds (such as CBD and other cannabinoids) from impurities and to remove as much THC as possible. This produces a concentrated output with non-detectable levels of THC (<0.01%).

3. Distillation

Distillation refines the oil by removing any compounds, such as lipids, waxes, flavonoids and chlorophyll, which may negatively affect the taste, consistency and purity of the end product.

The final step is the addition of organic MCT oil (extracted from coconut) as our carrier oil. All this, just to ensure you receive the highest quality, organic products.

Top reasons to choose Naturecan CBD

Organic hemp oil

Our hemp producers have an official Organic Certification. This allows us to guarantee the safety and quality of our raw materials, as well as our end products.

Safety Studies

We take part in a number of studies to understand how the compounds we use are processed within the body. In particular, the ADME study looks at adsorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion of said compound (in this case, Cannabidiol), allowing us to evaluate the safety of the compound within the body.

Furthermore, Toxicology studies take place alongside ASME studies to understand how toxic a substance may be and how it can affect organs within the body. This way, we are able to apply safe dosages to a product. This prevents the likelihood of a negative health outcome from the use of such a substance.

Lastly, stability studies are carried out to measure the environmental conditions of the quality of said product, providing an accurate shelf-life

These studies require a large amount of time and investment, but this ultimately ensures that you are using the safest possible products on the market.

Sustainability and Environmental Goals

At Naturecan, we track all of our products at every stage of their lifecycle – from the hemp seed being planted to the finished product being delivered to your door. Throughout this process, it’s our mission to reduce our carbon footprint and give back to nature.

We’re on a mission to become carbon neutral, and we also plant a tree for every order made on our website. We feel that this is important because trees are essential tools for mitigating global climate change and biodiversity loss.

We’re only at the start of our sustainability journey. As society and technology continue to evolve, we’ll be looking to improve wherever we can.

Certified Quality

1. Labdoor Accredited

Naturecan’s CBD oil has been independently tested by Labdoor, a company that helps customers to make informed purchasing decisions by verifying the accuracy of products label claims and testing supplements for potentially harmful ingredients.

Our oil received the highest possible rating (A+) from Labdoor, with non-detectable levels of THC (<0.01%),  zero heavy metal (lead, arsenic, cadmium and mercury) and microbial (yeast, mold, coliforms and E. coli) contamination, providing further confirmation of the integrity and quality of our product.

2. TUV SUD Tested

Naturecan’s CBD oil has also been certified by TÜV SÜD. With an expansive portfolio of testing and certification services, TÜV SÜD protects customers by providing safety and security solutions and inspiring trust in technological developments.

TÜV SÜD confirmed that our CBD products contain non-detectable levels of THC (MOQ: 0.01%). They also verified that each bottle contains the declared amount of CBD and that our oil contains additional cannabinoids such as CBG, which increases the effectiveness of the oil through the phenomenon known as the ‘entourage effect’.

3. Eurofins Certified

A world-leading independent laboratory for food, environment, pharmaceutical and cosmetic products testing, Eurofins, has also certified Naturecan’s CBD oil. Eurofins provides customers with accurate data and expert advice to ensure they can choose safe and quality products.

Eurofins tested many of our products, including the 40% CBD oil, confirming that they contain non-detectable levels of THC (MOQ: 0.0025%). They also provided further confirmation that our oil contains other cannabinoids like CBG, and that each bottle contains the declared amount of CBD.

Takeaway

To summarise, we source our products from organic hemp because it helps us to minimise our environmental impact while guaranteeing product quality and safety.

We choose to source our organic hemp from Oregon, USA, as American producers have the best technology in the industry, and Oregon’s rich soils provide optimal growing conditions for hemp.

We have taken steps to ensure the best production and extraction processes, which has allowed us to progress through the first stage of the Novel Food Process, and has helped us on our journey to achieve our sustainable and environmental goals.
